Savanna Nature Trail

This nature trail system meanders through the lowland savanna ecosystem. Walk the gravel pathways and boardwalks to experience the open savanna, pine and oak woodlands, gallery forests, and seasonal ponds and streams. Learn about the ecology and importance of these unique habitats, and witness some of the amazing and often endemic flora and fauna found here, like the endangered yellow-headed parrots, and the silver palmetto palm. You may encounter gray foxes, agoutis, and even come across the paw prints of the elusive jaguar!

Birding

300 bird species have been recorded at the TEC, both on the “campus” and along our trails. Guests have an excellent opportunity to observe a variety of resident birds such as the Plain Chachalaca, Boat-billed Heron, Russet-naped Wood-rail, and Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. North American visitors will be pleasantly surprised to see some familiar faces during migration season, such as those of the Magnolia Warbler, American Redstart, Belted Kingfisher, and Gray Catbird. Discover the full list of recorded bird species at the TEC here.

Canoe Trips

We offer half-day canoe trips down the Sibun River with a licensed tour guide. Launch off sandy river banks to navigate through the riparian forest while learning about the cultural and ecological value of the river. This is also a great birding opportunity, and other wildlife such as iguanas, monkeys, hawks, and even crocodiles are sometimes spotted!
