FAQs

How do I get to The Belize Zoo?

The Belize Zoo is located at Mile 29 on the George Price Highway, roughly halfway between Belize City and Belmopan. It is a 30 minute drive from Belize City or the international airport, and 20 minute drive from Belmopan.

The public bus system stops at the Zoo’s entrance, and there are buses roughly every half hour from either direction. On Sundays and holidays the buses are less frequent.

Taxis from the international airport or water taxi and cruise ship terminals also offer chartered transport to and from the Zoo.

Is the Zoo wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The Belize Zoo is the first and only nature destination in Belize that is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. All our pathways allow for use by wheelchairs, strollers, and walkers. We have a limited number of wheelchairs available for complementary use. An accessible bathroom facility is also available on site.

How long does it take to see the whole zoo?

A proper tour of the Zoo can take between an hour and two hours. However, the time allotted for any tour group or independent visitor can be dependent on the visitor, time limitations, and personal interest.

The Zoo is roughly 30 acres in size, and has over 40 species viewable to the public. There is roughly a mile of winding pathways used to navigate the grounds.

Are there overnight accommodations?

Yes. Our Tropical Education Center is located just a mile away from the Zoo, and offers a variety of lodging options, as well as meals, and airport transfers.

What should I bring?

All our pathways are outdoors, and, while there are some shelters spread out around the Zoo for sun and rain, remember we are in the humid Neotropics!

Comfortable, closed-toe shoes (flip-flops and sandals are no match for bugs), insect repellent, baseball cap/hat, sunshades, sunblock or long-sleeved shirts, raincoat/umbrella, small backpack, and a water bottle are all recommended depending on the time of year you visit.

Are pets allowed?

Pets are not allowed at the Zoo or TEC.

How can I plan my time at the Zoo?

On World Wildlife Day 2024, we launched our interactive map, the first of its kind for tourism destinations in Belize!

With this dynamic new technology, you can plan your route around the Zoo, book tickets in advance, see what animal experiences are available, and more!
