Belize Zoo “Wildlands” Update

Two years ago TBZ launched its “Wildlands” campaign with the goal of acquiring 950 acres of critical habitat in the Maya Forest Corridor (formerly the Central Belize Corridor). Our fundraising campaign was very successful due to overwhelming support from friends and donors.

Additionally, significant grant funding was provided by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the International Conservation Fund of Canada (ICFC), which allowed us to secure the total funds necessary to purchase the land.

After a long and challenging journey, TBZ is extremely proud to report that the land purchase agreement was completed, and the title transfer is currently being processed at the Lands Registry Unit here in Belize. Our next steps involve conducting a biodiversity “inventory” on the newly acquired property, which will help inform and empower a management plan for the area.

We would not have been able to achieve this milestone in the preservation of the Corridor without the phenomenal help of our supporters and partners. A huge PAWS UP to everyone who made this possible! Thanks to you, our stunning landscape will be safeguarded for generations to come. Jaguars, tapirs, parrots, pumas, and many more wonderful wildlife species will continue to roam free through these “Wildlands.”
