Junior Buddy the Jaguar is probably the most famous jaguar
in the world. His annual birthdays have exposed hundreds of people to the
magnificence of his species. There is another international superstar jaguar
out there, however, and his name is Pat the Cat!
Like many communities, Mahogany Heights has its share of dogs in need of vet care. The Belize Zoo, teaming with vet Dr. Jess Braun, from the Hopkins Belize Humane Society (HBHS) and her vet assistants, recently paid a visit to Mahogany Heights.
City kids seldom have the opportunity to get to know the wildlife which calls Belize home. Their days are marked by urban activities, and this is far away from the magical arena which includes, Tapirs, Jaguars and lots more beguiling beasts.
Zoo Education team, Johanna Pacheco and Jamal Andrewin, work to provide animal fun for schools in Belize City. A recent effort was in collaboration with St. John’s Anglican School principal, Ms. Griffith. They engineered an essay contest for participation from the entire school.
Our colleagues and friends from Cornell Vet School applied their professional magic during a week of vet examinations at The Belize Zoo recently. Vet students, these up- and- coming animal doctors, gained a great deal of knowledge, as they accompanied our zoo animal management staff.
Every year, hundreds of senior high school students in Belize test the waters of the “adult word” by engaging in career experience training. For many of the students, these experiences influence the direction of their future professional careers.
